FAQ’s ...

...here are some of the most frequently asked questions relating to RYA Practical Sailing Courses.

Q: What about accommodation & sleeping
arrangements...?

A: Students/Clients are accommodated in shared cabins
(2/cabin) and for hygienic reasons we do not supply bedding or towels. We do provide pillows and pillow cases alternatively you are more than welcome to bring your own.

Q: What additional costs are there during the course...?

A: All breakfasts and lunches plus one evening meal (reserved for the night sail) are provided for within the course fee.
The remaining evening meals are normally taken ashore at your own cost. We have found that Students wish to have some time off in the evenings and eat at local Pubs or Restaurants. We have provided food before but it just gets wasted..... Your Skipper/Instructor will direct you to the best places to eat. Often crews also sometimes like to top up the provided food with their own favourite treats, snacks and drinks...this is great!
Any yacht fuel and gas used during the course is provided for within the course fee.
Mooring fees are included unless otherwise stated. (see booking terms and conditions)
Wet weather gear is available free of charge...

Q: What is the duration of the course...?

A: All practical courses other than Start Yachting are 5 day courses. For Competent Crew and Day Skipper these do not have to be consecutive and can be broken down over a number of weekends usually two (2+3 weekends).

Q: What is the Royal Yachting Association...?

A: The RYA is the UK governing body representing sailing, windsurfing, motor boating, power boat racing, and personal watercraft, at sea and on inland waters.
The RYA Sail Cruising and Yachtmaster Scheme consists of a series of practical and shore based courses for power and sail providing a structured learning process on the theory of navigation, safety, and seamanship.
There are also one day courses on VHF, First Aid, Sea Survival, Radar and Diesel Engine Maintenance.
The aim is to encourage high standards of seamanship and navigation through a voluntary system. Course completion certificates are issued for the introductory courses up to Coastal Skipper which can be enjoyed to simply increase ones knowledge and confidence, or to use as a progression to the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Certificates of Competence which are recognised by maritime authorities’ world wide.

Q: What is a Training Centre...?

A: A training centre can be a club, sailing school or sea
training organisation.
All training centres must;
•Have qualified staff
•Suitable boats
•Adequate safety procedures
A training centre is run by a Yachtmaster Instructor and all our skippers our fully qualified to instruct to the appropriate level.
Our yachts fully conform to the regulations laid down by the MCA and the RYA.

Q: What is the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal/Yachtmaster Offshore Scheme?

A: The RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal and Yachtmaster
Offshore Qualifications are only gained by a practical examination. There is no requirement to take an RYA course before taking the examination although joining a Yachtmaster Prep course is suggested as a good way of brushing up on your knowledge prior to the exam.
An RYA/MCA Certificate of competence is recognised by maritime authorities throughout the world and is often one of the required qualifications for professional skippers.

Q: What are the rules on Alcohol...?

A: We operate a dry ship whilst at sea however once safely tied up crews are welcome to enjoy their evening as they wish. We do however remind crews that the effects of alcohol can have a detrimental effect on their own safety as well as the enjoyment of others not only at the time but also during the following day. We therefore kindly request that moderation is the best policy and to respect others onboard who are sharing what is inevitable a more cramped environment than everyone is used to.
At no point during the course either ashore or onboard is the taking of drugs permitted. Any person found using drugs will be excluded from the course immediately.
We do reserve the right to exclude any crew member from the course whose actions for whatever reason are having an adverse effect on the other crew member’s enjoyment of the course. In these cases the Instructors decision is final.

Q: What teaching ratio do you operate to...?

A: The maximum pupil/instructor recommendation ratio is 5:1
but we prefer 4:1 as this offers more instruction time for students.
