JBY Visits Solent Coastguard

Solent Coast Guard, this is yacht ‘Crews Control’ call sign MDVA9 request a visit to MRSC/MRCC Solent… not a radio check or a weather report this time but we wanted to see for ourselves what happens behind the scenes at one of the UK’s busiest Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centres.
Following a conversation with the Coastguard at the Southampton Boat show back in September it was suggested that a visit could be arranged for us, our student’s family and friends. A fantastic opportunity, it would add interest and value to our programme in the New Year.
We were met on arrival (all seven of us) by Solent Coastguard’s visits co-ordinator Watch Officer Gary Hall. The presentation that followed was very comprehensive and covered the history of the Coastguard Service, the structure and management of the MRCC Centre and centres nationwide, operational areas, incident co-ordination, technical systems and assets, the way forward for the future of the Coastguard Service and more.
After the presentation we took a look around the Operations Room. We had been asked to leave our AIS (Automatic Identification System) turned on (on our yacht) so we could see how it appears on their tracking systems….now that was something else…!
Everyone who attended really enjoyed the visit, most informative and interesting. We thank the Watch Officers and Staff at Solent Coastguard for opening their doors to us on Monday and a special thank you to Gary Hall for suggesting the visit and arranging it for JBY.

Crews Control’s New Guardwires

wpid Crews Control @ Sea 150x112 Crews Controls New GuardwiresCrews Control our Bavaria 38 cruising yacht is maintained to the highest of standards. Safety and security of the crew are of vital importance so we decided to install some new guard wires.

It has always amaised me that yacht manufacturers install plastic coated guardwires on new yachts even though is has been proven that they can be subject to rust. Stainless steel suffer from corrosion if coated in plastic and the condition of our old guardwires is indeed evidence of that!

Ocean Rigging of Lymington came to the rescue, Dick J and the crew have done a fine job and we thank them for their
attention to detail.

As the seasons change now we move forward and shape a course for the future. Crews Control and JBY evolves as we progress forward, she has AIS now, a major innovation in vessel safety…

Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012

Volvo Ocean Race 2011/12 starts 5 November …. Sacrifice, honour and a spirit of adventure: In the quest to conquer the Everest of the ocean Volvo Ocean Race s… http://t.co/9kkh3lqQ

Overview

The Volvo Ocean Race is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour which has been built on the spirit of great seafarers – fearless men who sailed the world’s oceans aboard square rigged clipper ships more than a century ago.

Their challenge back then was not a race as such, but recording the fastest time between ports. This meant new levels of pride for themselves and great recognition for their vessel.

The spirit that drove those commercial sailors along the web of trade routes, deep into the bleak latitudes of the Southern Ocean and around the world’s most dangerous capes, emerges today in the form of the Volvo Ocean Race, a contest now seen as the pinnacle of achievement in the sport.

The first edition of this sporting adventure came in the wake of two remarkable sailors of the last century, Sir Francis Chichester and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, men who drew worldwide acclaim for amazing solo voyages around the planet. Inevitably their success led to talk in international sailing circles of a race around the world for fully crewed yachts. It became a reality in 1973 with The Whitbread round the World Race, the longest, most demanding and perilous sporting contest the world had known.

Dangerous it was. In that very first race three competing sailors were lost after being washed overboard during storms. This led to the inevitable call for that inaugural contest to be the last, but the desire for unbridled adventure and great competition led to the race being staged every four years.

The re-badged Volvo Ocean Race was run for the first time in 2001-02. Today it is, quite simply, the ‘Everest of Sailing’.

During the nine months of the Volvo Ocean Race, which starts in Alicante, Spain in October 2011 and concludes in Galway, Ireland, during early July 2012, the teams will sail over 39,000 nautical miles of the world’s most treacherous seas via Cape Town, Abu Dhabi, Sanya, Auckland, around Cape Horn to Itajaí, Miami, Lisbon, and Lorient.

Each of the entries has a sailing team of 11 professional crew and the race requires their utmost skills, physical endurance and competitive spirit as they race day and night for more than 20 days at a time on some of the legs. They will each take on different jobs onboard the boat and on top of these sailing roles, there will be two sailors that have had medical training, as well as a sailmaker, an engineer and a dedicated media crew member.

During the race the crews will experience life at the extreme: no fresh food is taken onboard so they live off freeze dried fare, they will experience temperature variations from -5 to +40 degrees Celsius and will only take one change of clothes. They will trust their lives to the boat and the skipper and experience hunger and sleep deprivation.

The race is the ultimate mix of world class sporting competition and on the edge adventure, a unique blend of onshore glamour with offshore drama and endurance.

It is undeniably the world’s premier global race and one of the most demanding team sporting events in the world.

Yachting School Prepares for Busy September & October

Team Nigel...The Competent Crews 300x225 Yachting School Prepares for Busy September & October

Team Nigel 'The Competent Crews'

The month of August was expected to be a busy one, what with Cowes Week and a number of featured yachting events taking place in the Solent. We never would have imagined though how busy we would be as the month unfolded.

June and July were great as we were out on the water with our very popular Competent Crews Courses and the ever increasingly popular Practical Boat Handling Courses but as we came to the end

PBH Nick Wells and Emma 4 300x225 Yachting School Prepares for Busy September & October

Practical Boat Handling with Nick & Emma

of July the phone and email server became red hot! It became clear that we were going to need either another yacht or another skipper. We elected for another skipper to take care of the Corporate Events and just made sure that ‘Crews Control’ our

Crews Control at Sea...

Bavaria 38 Cruising Yacht remained in good order and serviceable to take care of the RYA Courses. She would have to be ‘turned around’ and go out again on the next booking and we would have to make sure our routines ran smoothly. We are very pleased that they did.

So, as August came and went with us almost non stop and September fully upon us we take some time to conduct the ever essential maintenance on ‘Crews Control’ and have a few days off  before our next run of Start Yachting Courses, Competent Crew Courses and some really good ‘Mile Building’ Courses during September and October.

Man Overboard Drill point but remember to sit down 300x225 Yachting School Prepares for Busy September & October

Man Overboard Drill, 'point but remember to sit down'!

All of our Courses and Events are memorable to us, some more than others it has to be said and everyone involved deserves a special mention. Unfortunately the list would be a little long. We thank everyone from our long suffering and very supportive family and friends, our skippers and our technical support team but especially our crews and clients without whom we would be tied up at the dock and not out enjoying the sailing.

We look forward now to the next few busy months and hope the weather will be on our side. We will visit Southampton Boat Show on a number of occasions in September armed with brochures and a major shopping list but were not saying if the list involves a boat!

We wish ‘fair winds’ to all JBY
